Pinewood Derby Races 3/24/24
Build Day: Saturday, March 16 from 1-3pm | Race Day: Sunday, March 24 - see times below
We are excited to host this year’s Pinewood Derby on Sunday afternoon, March 24. The derby will be hosted in the St Mark Catholic School's gym. Exact times TBA.
All racers will need to purchase a car kit from the Cape Fear Scout Shop ($7).
The track will be set up and ready for an afternoon of fun!! Dens will compete against each other in that den group only – then the top 3 from each den group will compete in the overall Pack Championship.
Rules are as follows:
Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces – Pack scales are the final measurement.
Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted. Additional wheels can be purchased separately.
Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
Official wheels and axles may not be altered in any way.
No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be dry lubricated with powdered graphite.
The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.
Previous year cars may not be used in the race.
Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete.
If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment.
After final approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.
If, during a race, a car leaves its lane and, in so doing, interferes with another racer, then the race will be run again.
Cars that fail to follow these rules will not be allowed to race.
A computer program will be used with the track that calculates each heat and allows each participant to race in each lane of the track each one time. Once cars are checked in they will only be handled by the race committee. Cars will not be handled unless it comes off the track during a race and needs to be repaired. Repair time will be granted if this occurs. The division racing will be allowed in Pit Row during those races.
All participants with a car will be allowed to vote 1 time for their favorite decorated derby car.
At the conclusion of the Pack Championship division, we will host an Outlaw Division! This division is for all parents and non-scout siblings who want to take the opportunity to build a derby car side by side with their scout.
The Coastal District Pinewood Derby is expected to take place on Sunday, April 14th at the Jeff Gordon Chevrolet Dealership of f of South College Rd.
More details and registration will be coming soon, but go ahead and save the date!
